How to Choose The Right Hay for Your Animals

Choosing the right hay depends on the animal's nutritional needs:

Alfalfa is high-protein for growing/milking animals, Timothy is ideal for horses/rabbits, and Orchard/Bermuda suit cattle/sheep. Small bales (40-75 lbs) are best for small-scale feeding, while large rounds/squares are for herd, high-volume, or storage-efficient feeding.
Best Hay Types by Animal:
  • Horses: Timothy (high fiber, digestible), Orchard grass, or mixed grass hay are standard for daily feeding. Alfalfa is suitable for high-performance or hard-keeping horses.
  • Cattle: Alfalfa is best for lactating cows (high calcium/protein), while mixed grass hay (orchard/brome) is suitable for maintenance.
  • Goats & Sheep: Leafy alfalfa or high-quality grass hay is preferred. Legume hay (clover, alfalfa) is ideal for growing lambs or milking goats.
  • Rabbits & Guinea Pigs: Timothy hay is the primary choice, specifically first or second cut for, to aid digestion and dental health.
Hay Bale Sizes & Uses:
  • Small Square Bales (40–75 lbs): Best for small farms, horses, and easy, manual feeding.
  • Small Round Bales (4x4, 600–800 lbs): Good for medium-sized herds.
  • Large Round/Square Bales (800–1,500+ lbs): Best for large-scale feeding and cattle, often used with mechanized feeding.
Quality Checklist:
Always ensure hay is free of mold, dust, and weeds. Bright green color usually indicates better nutritional value.
